Many people think that potato peels are just food scraps to be thrown in the bin. But they can actually be reused in various ways, in the kitchen and elsewhere, avoiding any unnecessary waste. Here are our suggestions to get the most out of them.
Without a shadow of a doubt, potatoes are one of the most loved and eaten foods in the world, by adults and children alike, mainly due to how versatile they are when cooked. We can eat them boiled, fried or baked. However, in most cases, we remove their skin, considering it a food scrap to be thrown in the bin. In truth, by paying due attention and following a few tricks, even this can be recycled, in the kitchen and elsewhere, while getting the most out of their beneficial properties and therefore reducing waste with a view to circular economy.

Potato peels can also certainly be eaten, provided that you keep a few things in mind. Always choose potatoes free from any pesticide residues, as ours èVita Residue-Free. What’s more, they must be free from any sprouts and stored away from sources of light: potatoes that are too old, have sprouted or been exposed to sunlight have a very high concentration of solanine, a substance which, when eaten in large quantities, can be toxic for humans. By keeping these precautions in mind, we can calmly avoid, when not required by the recipe, removing the potato’s outer surface. Alternatively, the peels can be fried, therefore becoming a delicious snack. Another idea could be to hollow out the flesh from the tuber after baking it and reusing the outside to make potato “boats” to be filled however you like.

Not many people know that potato peels can be used for personal care: more specifically, for getting rid of swelling under the eyes. But how? You have to put them in the freezer for about 15 minutes, then apply the cut side onto the bags and keep them there for at least 10 minutes, until they have warmed up in contact with the skin. The micronutrients found in the skin, combined with the low temperature, are excellent cleansers that will help reduce the problem.
