Potatoes and beer: pairings to try

Potatoes and beer are a combination that offers countless possibilities. Both are extremely versatile and, depending on the preparation and the characteristics of the beer, can create very different pairings.

To find the right one, it is not enough to choose the type of potato: you also need to consider how it is cooked, which ingredients accompany it, and which flavours and textures come through in the dish.

For fried potatoes, including the lighter version prepared in an air fryer, the ideal pairing is an International Pale Lager (such as Moretti, Heineken or Corona). It is a pale beer with balanced bitterness and a pleasant carbonation that cleanses the palate and enhances the crispy, golden finish.

If the potatoes are the star of an oven-baked dish made with èVita Residuo Zero, seasoned with oil, salt and aromatic herbs, a Vienna Lager (such as Peroni Gran Riserva Rossa or Ichnusa Non Filtrata) can be an interesting choice. This is a moderately intense amber beer, characterised by a smooth, clean maltiness, with notes of bread and toast and a slight bitter component. These qualities make it perfect for accompanying delicate flavours without overpowering them.

When more flavourful ingredients come into play, such as cheese, pancetta or speck, a Festbier can be a good choice. It is more full-bodied while remaining smooth and easy-drinking, with a pronounced malty character. Its greater intensity makes it well suited to rich preparations without becoming overwhelming, while its malty notes pair naturally with the flavours developed during cooking and browning.

For creamier dishes, such as mashed potatoes, a velvety soup or a potato cream made with èVita Patata di Campo, the contrast can be more interesting. A Witbier (such as Hoegaarden) is characterised by high carbonation, low bitterness and citrusy, spicy aromas, mainly associated with orange and coriander. Its freshness and aromatic profile balance the rich, enveloping texture of the dish, enhancing the creamy consistency of the potatoes through contrast.

When the potato is paired with smoked ingredients, meats or strongly flavoured cheeses, you can be more daring with an Irish Stout (such as Guinness Draught). Its roasted character, often associated with notes of coffee and chocolate, together with the style’s bitterness, creates a particularly well-suited pairing for richer preparations and well-browned potatoes.

There is also plenty of room for experimentation and less obvious combinations: starting with the potato preparation and its characteristics, you can choose a beer capable of creating harmony, contrast or continuity between flavours. Because when the pairing works, potatoes and beer do more than simply complement each other: each can help bring out nuances in the other that would be more difficult to perceive on their own.
