Today is International Day for Biological Diversity, an annual event established by the United Nations in 2000 and held on 22nd May with the goal of improving knowledge and awareness of problems linked to biodiversity. The chosen date commemorates the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) introduced in Nairobi, Kenya, on 22 May 1992 and signed in Rio de Janeiro on 5 June 1992. Biodiversity means the biological variation and diversity of all forms of life on Earth: plants, animals and micro-organisms, and all the complex ecosystems they form. More species means more richness; to date, about 1.7 million species of animals, plants and fungi have been recorded, but there are probably 8-9 million and perhaps even up to 100 million. However, human activity is putting this scenario in real jeopardy. According to the national Red Lists of flora created by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 89% of the habitats of Community interest found in Italy have an unfavourable conservation status, while 68% of ecosystems are in danger.
Saving the environment and protecting nature are fundamental pillars of Romagnoli F.lli’s policy. In fact, the company is committed to protecting the region’s natural systems and biodiversity, using common natural resources sustainably. In 2021, thanks to analysis of the position of all its locations compared with protected natural areas or with high biological variation and diversity value, Romagnoli reduced its possible environmental impact. The analysis conducted also proved that none of the company’s locations are situated near to protected natural areas and/or ones with high biodiversity value. Furthermore, Romagnoli strives to enhance the region where its factories are located, encouraging the spontaneous vegetation (native plants and flowers) found in surrounding green areas.
