Even though potatoes are not a common theme in music, there are various songs that more or less directly refer to this food.
Here are some examples:
Patatina – Wilma De Angelis (1961): The song Patatina, written by Gianni Meccia, was sung in 1961 by Wilma De Angelis at the Sanremo Music Festival. Despite not achieving a great result in the singing competition, this track was a huge hit with the public and is still very popular today due to its light-hearted, ironic tone.
My Name Is Potato – Rita Pavone (1977): Written by Fabrizio Feberighi and Susy Bellucci, arranged by Franco Micalizzi and produced by Roberto Davini, this track was sung by Rita Pavone with Paola Orlandi during the chorus and was used for the opening theme song to the TV show “Rita: e io”, shown on Rai 1 every Saturday evening in 1977. The vinyl record was also released the same year, which featured the programme’s end theme tune on the B side, entitled Ma volendo. In the black and white video for My Name Is Potato, which is easy to find online, a very young Rita Pavone sings the verses and chorus of this cute song while talking to an animated potato drawn by Bruno Bozzetto; the animated tuber then answers the singer in a strong American accent.
Potato – Cheryl Wheeler (1999): This funny song by Cheryl Wheeler about a potato became a popular hit. Cheryl introduces it as the most ridiculous song she has ever written. It is extremely funny. She was walking through the woods with James, her border collie, when the chorus of the Mexican Hat Dance kept running through her head, using only the word potato. To make matters more difficult, she decided to sing it so that each line started with a different syllable. Later, when she was heading to a concert, she started on the verses. John Porter McMeans created an animated version of this song, which has over nine million views on YouTube.
Hot Potato – The Wiggles (2017): This song by the Wiggles is from the album and video Yummy Yummy, originally written by John Field, when he and the Wiggles were busking. It is a very popular kids’ song which encourages them to move around and play with an imaginary hot potato.
The Potato Song (Cuz I Want To) – Kesha (2020): This song by Kesha is from her fourth studio album, High Road. The singer stated in a Reddit AMA that she and her mother, Pebe Sebert, wrote the song together thinking of a shared dream of living on an island so they could do everything they wanted, including growing potatoes.
