The planting phase is underway for Sicilian new potatoes, a revered local product grown mostly in coastal areas of the Siracusa, Ragusa and Catania provinces.
The area’s fertile soil and mild winters make it possible to move up the vegetative cycle and obtain a precocious spring harvest - as early as March - for this type of potato, famous for its trademark elongated shape, tender thin skin and delicate taste.
After a 2018 commercial campaign characterised by high-quality productions and extremely remunerative producer prices, market indicators seem to suggest that the 2019 campaign could be equally successful. Consumers continue to appreciate Sicily’s patate novelle for their quality and versatility.
For this growing cycle, Romagnoli F.lli Spa has introduced new potato varieties to its cultivations in Sicily, including Laudine, Levante and Generosa, which join the well-established Arizona, Arinda and Elodie. In particular, for the Vogue variety, Romagnoli relied on its long-standing partnership with Agrico, a Dutch cooperative that specialises, among other things, in the breeding and varietal multiplication of seed tubers.
Together with its partner, Romagnoli F.lli Spa developed an early-season yellow-flesh, semi-firm potato variety with oval-elongated, evenly-sized tubers.
This variety also stands out for the tubers’ rapid growth, which allows for early harvests, and the good culinary characteristics which make it perfect for all cooking uses. Suitable for growing various agricultural settings, it was conceived especially for southern Italy and the Italian islands.
