To celebrate Epiphany in a more original, healthy way, this year fill your stocking with homemade sweets and treats. Here are a few delicious ideas.
Fruit jellies. Fruit jellies are much-loved by children. To make them at home, you just need to make a syrup from water, sugar and fruit juice, mix it with a few sheets of gelatine, and pour the liquid into little chocolate moulds. After 5 hours in the fridge, the fruit jellies will be ready.
Orange lollipops. What would a stocking be without a lollipop? Mix some sugar with some orange juice, bring it to the boil while stirring continuously, leave it to cool and then put the syrup onto baking paper forming little discs. Add the little sticks for the lollipops and leave them to set.
Sweet potato crisps. Sweet potatoes can be used to make delicious sweet snacks. Once cooked, put a few of them in small paper bags then place them inside the stocking. Here’s the recipe for sweet potato crisps.
Biscuits with potato shortcrust pastry. Homemade biscuits are always better than the usual ones bought from the shops! Use potato shortcrust pastry as a base for your biscuits and fill them with cream or jam. Here’s a recipe for biscuits made with potato shortcrust pastry and jam.
Toffees. To make your own toffees, you just need a few simple ingredients: sugar, cream, butter and honey. Mix them in a saucepan and bring to the boil while stirring continuously. Pour the mixture onto a sheet of baking paper in a pan and leave it to set. When it has hardened, cut it with a knife into small cubes. Wrap the toffees in small rectangles of baking paper and then in little sheets of coloured paper.
