Our èVita Sicilian New Potatoes come from the best production areas in Sicily where the reddish iron-rich soil gives these potatoes excellent organoleptic qualities and a delicious flavour. The quality varieties we have selected for this particular region are Arizona, Elodie, Levante and Vogue.
The current production situation around Syracuse is looking ideal. Following months of widespread drought, the climate over the last few weeks has actually helped the plants to recover, with good growth of the tubers, partly supported by the higher temperatures.
The next few weeks will be key, both for determining their early harvesting and their size. The setting (number of tubers per plant) was standard for the area and in line with the previous harvest - 3-5 tubers per plant - with higher variation from lot to lot.
The start of harvest is forecast - with a few particularly early lots - by the end of March, with potatoes featuring good skin and organoleptic qualities.
