Harvesting the fruits of your vegetable garden is always satisfying. Here is what to sow in August in your vegetable garden, pots or open fields.
Even though the high temperatures require extra attention on the health of our plants, with adequate watering and soil you can produce excellent results even when sowing in the middle of summer.
Fennel. Perfect for eating in summer thanks to its refreshing properties, fennel requires fertile soil that has good drainage and is not too compact so it can grow without any stagnant water. Be careful with watering, particularly during summer: the soil must always be kept damp.
Rocket. Versatile and with a bold flavour, rocket is characterised by how relatively simple it is to grow. It is essential that its soil drains well (stagnant water can damage the plant) and it is frequently watered.
Carrots. Crunchy and rich in water and fibre, carrots require sandy soil with good drainage and are great for growing in vegetable gardens or fields. Given the length of the roots, it is good to keep the plants well separated (about 8 cm). To avoid stagnant water, it is a good idea not to over-water; watering will only be needed when the soil starts to dry out.
Radishes. Another perfect vegetable for eating in summer, radishes should be sown in a field or vegetable garden with loose soil with good drainage. You can solve the problem of clayey soil by adding sand about two months before sowing. For growing during summer, it is a good idea to water moderately but frequently.
