International Students’ Day, which is celebrated today, holds a special meaning as it invites us to think about the vital importance of freedom and the right to education, two closely connected values. Furthermore, it is an opportunity to recognise the potential of students as agents for change in society. The date of 17thNovember is linked to the events in Czechoslovakia during World War II in 1939. This celebration commemorates the anniversary of the Nazi attack at the University of Prague, which followed the protests against the killing of Jan Opletal.
This annual event was officially established on 17 November 1941 in London by the International Union of Students, also formed of many refugees and working together with the Allies. This tradition has been continued thanks to the International Union of Students, which worked with National Students’ Unions in Europe and other groups in order to obtain official recognition from the UN.
